When you're teaching a class where Ss need to talk about jobs, here are some suggested activities:
Lead in: What are good things and bad things people may say about their jobs? Ss discuss this question in small groups. Open class feedback on content.
Pre- teach vocabulary related to jobs:
Ask questions to elicit answers:
1. Company car
a. When a company buys a car, does the car belong to the worker? (No)
b. Does the car belong to the company? (Yes)
c. What would you call the car? (A Company Car)
T should go over difference between adjective + noun and compound nouns.
2. Pension
a. When someone does not work anymore because of their age, they may get money.
b. Does the company pay them money? (Yes)
c. Does the government pay them money? (Yes)
d. What is this called?
3. Free lunch
a. When a company pays for a worker’s lunch, is the company giving something to the worker? (Yes)
b. What is this called?
4. Health Insurance
a. Is it expensive to pay for the hospital or doctor if you don’t have help? (Yes)
b. Is there a plan that helps people pay for a doctor or hospital visit? (Yes)
c. Do companies help pay for this plan? (Yes)
d. What is this called?
5. Holidays
a. Is it important to have time off from work? (Yes)
b. Do companies give time off from work? (Yes)
c. What is it called?
6. Training
a. Is it important to be a better worker?
b. Do some companies help workers become better?
c. What do companies give new workers?
Controlled Practice: T instructs Ss to think about the 3 most important things they want in a job and why. They then share with their partner. T monitors. Brief content feedback from 2 or 3 students.
Freer Practice: Find Someone Who- Ss go around the room asking each other if they want……(a pension, etc). If the Ss says Yes, they must ask a follow-up question such as Why? What kind of lunch? Ss should take notes on the piece of paper provided for content feedback later.
